Having discarded all other "competitors", a sperm penetrates inside an egg. It is fertilization. The egg will grow at a spectacular speed.

  • Between them, spermatozoon and ovum form a single cell (or egg) which, a few hours later, already divides into two cells, then four, eight, sixteen, and so on. Cell multiplication is on the way: on the 12th day, there are about 2000 cells. During the first days of pregnancy, the fertilized egg is free to move from the fallopian tube to the uterus, before nestling there comfortably.

Placenta, amniotic fluid, umbilical cord: 3 "appendages" that take care of your baby

At the end of the 2nd week *, the egg is well attached to the uterine wall. He takes care of perfecting his installation and organizing his annexes.

  • The placenta, or for the moment preplacenta, because this organ will not be fully completed until mid-pregnancy even if it is operational from the beginning. It ensures the nutritive and respiratory exchanges between you and the embryo. It also acts as a protective barrier against microbes. The future placenta begins to form in this second week, half from the uterine wall and the other half from a membrane of the egg, the trophoblast. It is therefore a joint body, fœto-maternal: it takes two to make it, mom and baby!
  • The amniotic fluid. From the 8th day, a mini cavity filled with liquid is hollowed out in the dorsal part of the embryo, grows little by little and ends up around the embryo. Your future baby then bathes in an aquatic paradise! This pocket of water protects it from shocks and other aggressions, it guarantees a constant temperature.
  • The umbilical cord begins to build: it will also end mid-pregnancy, the 4th month. This "pipe" connecting the embryo to the maternal placenta houses a vein carrying nutrients and oxygen, and two arteries evacuating carbon dioxide and waste.
